Well, they’re a great toy and even a tool if used correctly.
They say in aviation that there is an upside and a downside to everything airplane related. I subscribe to that theory.
UPSIDE: Obviously speed brakes are a help for extra drag wanted in a Mooney. The rumble of deployed speed brakes is very sexy indeed, however us long time Mooney types really don’t need them to slow the plane down. We simply plan ahead. Those not so experienced just keep pulling on the throttle until the engine is shock cooled without even giving a thought to reducing RPM which makes the prop bite a larger piece of the air thus making the engine work harder which translates in to warmer temperatures. 19.5 squared works well for most normally aspirated Mooneys while the turbo models work well at 1800-2000 rpm and a slow reduction in MP as you loose altitude (about 2” per minute is a good rule of thumb).
Speed brakes will work well by just deploying them without immediate power changes and will yield in that configuration about 500 fpm descent rate at your current cruise power setting. (Don’t forget to reduce MP as you descend in to thicker air, and don’t forget to richen the mixture as the descent progresses).
Accidental take-offs with speed brakes deployed are also possible in case you forget to retract them. While speed brakes loose authority as you slow, they can still help plant the bird on the ground after landing along with retracting your flaps, but deploy them after touchdown and resist using them in the pattern. (More on that later).
The maximum speed limit to a set of brakes coincide with the red line speed on your airspeed indicator. Using them in an emergency while much above red line can cause the air to blank out the tail and could zip the tail right off the plane, so take heed on that issue.

So, you like the idea of adding speed brakes do yo
Speed brakes can be an asset when accepting the localizer glide slope on instrument approach as they can give you an automatic 500 fpm descent rate in which most glide slope approaches are set at.
Downside:
Cost. About $6500 installed last I checked and that’s just the beginning if you don’t heed this warning: The reason that few Mooneys have landed gear up is that you need the drag of the gear to slow that quick mutha down! But (and this is a big but!) many pilots subconsciously know that they’ve pressed a button, they have the drag they need, and therefore have forgotten to lower the landing gear. Uh oh! The advent of inadvertent gear up landings have increased several fold since the application of speed brakes. If you install speed brakes, you may want to invest in a “bitching Betty” voice alert. Here is one example of one: http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/gearalert.php. There are other models at varying price ranges, but they work. They are also a pain and often times you may wish that the “voice” would shut the heck up!
There is really no excuse for anyone to inadvertently land gear up. Get used to checking and VERIFYING your gear is down at least 3 times within the traffic pattern and point to the stuff you are looking at. That way if you feel you forgot something, go around and check what that is.
You have probably seen the sharp 231 that we “zephroized” for a friend and customer based in Atlanta. Believe it or not, he went to an airshow and enrolled with the FAA for a designated instructor to fly with him for a safety check. Coincidentally, I had sold a Mooney to that same inspector years before. The inspector and my friend and loyal Mooneyland customer were having a great time flying and learning more about the 231 except that the speed brakes were deployed while in the pattern for landing. Neither pilot heeded the warning horn and neither pilot remembered to lower the landing gear. $40K and seven months later, my guy got his plane back from repair. He wanted you all to see this so the same speed brake mistake is not repeated. Scroll
