I just got this email in from one of my favorite Mooney Mechanics; Boyd Maddox:
This will give you some idea as to why you need this Mooney Inspections information.
zef, I DIDN’T BELIEVE WHAT I WAS SEEING Or Why you use a Mooney savvy shop Or Why you get a Pre-Purchase Or OH MY GOD!
I received a phone call asking if I would do a Pre-purchase on a 1966 Mooney M20E and I said sure. A date and time was agreed upon and the plane arrived as scheduled. She was very PURTY with her gleaming paint job. The plane was advertised as having a fresh Majored engine, New Paint and Leather interior (it only had the seats done, no carpet, or plastic).
I got the books and started going through them. That is when PURTY turned to NOT SO PURTY.
The first thing that jumped out at me was the Hartzell Propeller AD 06-18-15 and a notation in the AD log that said NA by model number. The prop is a Hartzell HC-C2YK-1BF s/n CH15207. (Note! no suffix)
The next entry that caught my eye was AD 77-08-06 Oil Cooler next to this AD was the notation that this was also NA by s/n. The AD applies to all s/n between 407 & 1219 the serial number of this aircraft was in the middle.
Further search did not show AD 02-26-01 fuel injection lines, having being done and on & on.
The books left something to be desired also. There weren’t any mention of oil changes, AD’s being complied with, and on and on. There was a notation that the nose gear tubes had been adjusted to the proper specification (see # 2 below)
My inspection of the aircraft showed the following Discrepancies/Concerns: (taken directly from the Pre-Purchase report)
1. AD 06-18-15 Hartzell Propeller Hub.
2. Nose gear over center out of specification, Spec 10 ft-lb. set at 30+ ft-lb.
3. Nose gear truss bent beyond limits of 1/32nd, needs to be replaced with OH unit
4. Nose gear trunion needs over sized bushing
5. Flap pump leaking
6. Left master cylinder leaking
7. Main gear lubrication questionable
8. Both main gear leakage boots missing
9. Adjust right nose gear and left main gear doors
10. Left rear heater hose needs replacing
11. VFR Only placard missing
12. Brake hoses brittle and stiff, need to be replaced
13. Fuel pump overboard line does not exit the cowl
14. Oil cooler, does not comply with AD
15. Needs M20-289-000 kit in aileron links
· Observations:
I thought that it was rather strange to have 3 steel and one Chrome cylinder on a fresh, 25- hour Major Overhaul. However the compressions were great and it had a nice paint job. We were not able to locate the shop that did the work. The prop was safety with a single strand of safety wire running from bolt to bolt. When the owner was contacted he informed us that his mechanic had assured him that everything was in order and that we must be mistaken. Furthermore the owner/seller had had a pre-purchase done at a Mooney Service Center less than 25 hours ago. He also said that he had contacted a Prop Shop and that they had confirmed that the Prop didn’t fall within the AD but when I showed the same Prop Shop the Prop log they confirmed my findings (God knows I have had enough Mooney’s fell into that AD). The purchaser said that he would split the cost of fixing the Discrepancies with the seller. At which the seller insisted there wasn’t anything wrong with the plane and that he would come and get it. He actually asked the buyer to deliver it to New Mexico and the buyer declined, as he didn’t want the liability. It is hard for me to believe that there are people still out there that buy planes in this condition and then will not believe that there is something wrong. I’m sure that he thought that the buyer and I had contrived the story to cheat him out of his PURTY airplane. I’m also sure that he did not have a pre-purchase done and he only saw the pretty paint job and the leather seats. Some times I wonder why I keep doing this. I never cease to be amazed.
After several days the seller called and said that it would be a while before he could come get the plane so could I go ahead and do the nose gear repairs which will include replacing the Truss with an overhaul unit, re-bushing the trunion with an oversized unit and setting the gear down limits to the proper specifications. This is a wise decision on his part and may just may keep his Purty airplane off its nose.

WHAT ABOUT MONEY SAVING IDEAS FOR THOSE WHO CURRENTLY OWN MOONEYS? HERE'S A FREEBY THAT MAY SAVE YOU TENS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!
HOW CAN AN AIR COOLED ENGINE BE HARMED BY WATER?!
If you own an engine, then you need this!
Cheap insurance, you can build to help get you engine to its rated TBO
Continental and Lycoming typically rate their engine life from 1600 to 2000 hours of operation between overhauls on most models. However, the only owners likely to achieve that kind of rated performance are those who use their aircraft on a nearly daily basis. Why? The reason is not the flying. It is the parking!
A primary culprit for premature aircraft engine overhaul is corrosion caused by condensation within the engine cavity that occurs after shutdown. Aircraft engines that are used daily frequently reach their rated TBO because liquid condensate is boiled off on a regular basis. Low use rate often results in reduced engine life. As the engine cools and the internal temperature drops below the dew point, liquid moisture condenses out of the vapor and clings to internal engine surfaces. This liquid water then resumes its ongoing process of eating up your engine from the inside out. However, if the dew point can be made sufficiently low, then liquid water will never form. The engine dehumidifier provides a continuous positive pressure injection of extremely dry air (dew point approximately -100°F) on a 24/7 continuous flow basis. It is recovered at the crankcase blow-by vent, returned to the pump, dried again and re-injected in the oil fill port of the engine.
How it works
The dehumidifier is connected the engine as soon after engine shutdown as possible. (Before the engine cools) It is then run on a 24/7 basis. A small aquarium, type air pump forces ambient humid air thru a Plenum bottle containing Silica Gel (This is the stuff used in shipping and storing aircraft engines and electronics.) The Silica Gel has a great ability to suck up moisture and literally sucks it out of the air. The dried air is filtered and injected into the engine crankcase. Any moisture inside the engine vaporizes with the incoming dry air and is moved by the constant positive pressure from the air pump to the crankcase blow-by vent, back to the pump and the Silica Gel dryer. At some point in time, the Silica Gel will absorb all the moisture it can hold. This is oblivious because about 5% of Silica Gel crystals are dyed blue with Cobalt Chloride that changes to a Maroon Pinkish color when saturated with moisture.
When that happens:
Remove the saturated Silica Gel from the bottle. Spread it out on a cookie sheet.
Heat in oven at 275° F until the CoCI dyed silica gel turns blue again .. Cool and return to the plenum bottle.
That's' it!
The
frequency of this recycle rate will depend up the humidity of the local
environment. This may vary from months or more in dry regions down to just a
week or so in the deep humid South East. Adding more Silica Gel to the Plenum
will extend the service interval. Additional Silica Gel used for drying flowers
is available at the national chain of Michaels's Craft Stores

HOW MUCH DO YOU WANNA BET that the likelihood of your Mooney not being airworthy is great? WHAT!? NOW WHAT?! Well, this not only applies to Mooney's, but to most aircraft. We know our birds well enough not to need a PLACARD for everything in and out, but did you know that a single missing placard technically and legally renders your aircraft NON-AIRWORTHY? That it does, so you need to check your aircraft for the correct markings starting with the compass error card in which many are missing or unreadable. For those who's compass cards are there but barely visible from fading, MAKE A COPY NOW and replace the old one. ADDITIONALLY, there are umpteen interior placards and a bunch of exterior ones required by the FAA to reflect that which the aircraft manufacturer be installed as original and standard equipment. Below is an email I received recently which helped remind me to bring this OFTEN OVERLOOKED mandate to my attention:
>>>Hello, do you know where I can find instrument panel placards for a 1963 Mooney 20-C?
Also, I found your articles VERY informative. My 1963 manual says very little about how to operate, land etc. my Mooney. I have found a wealth of information on your website!
Thanks, Eileen
REPLY:
Hello Eileen. Nice to hear from you and thanks for the compliment on our website. We care about Mooney types like you!
The lack of Placards is prevalent in many Mooney aircraft and those owners don’t realize that without them, the aircraft is not airworthy.
The Maintenance/Parts/Service manual we provide will give you information on all placards required for your Mooney. Just click on the Maintenance CD button and make the purchase and I’ll get that right out to you.
Fly safe,
