Well, it hit the ole' 61 last month, so forgive me if I don't remember all of the names or cities where the runway's were should we say: UNUSUAL? Ones that stand out in my mind are Santa Paula California. I used to fly there a lot from Camarillo where John Spore allowed me to exercise his 1968 Mooney C model that he bought new and owns to this day. Anyhow it was back in 1974 when I was flying my first Mooney, about 3 years into my flying career. Their downwind was right along side of a mountain that kept you wondering if your right wing would hit, but they had the best pie in the airport's greasy spoon, and on weekends you'd usually sit down with Steve McQueen and hanger talk (motorcycles too!)
And then there was the time that I delivered a nice F model Mooney to its new owners in New Mexico as memory serves where you took off one way and landing the opposite. In other words; that short runway ended where the mountain canyon began. You would launch like you were on an aircraft carrier only with a huge obstruction on one end. No running off the end of that runway!
Let's see; oh yeah. There's an airport in one of the Carolina's, I'm thinking near Raleigh. Anyhow, it is cut from the top of a mountain; so it falls off to oblivion all the way around the airport. Something like Catalina Island's airport, but worse even considering the can't see over hump half way up the runway.
Aspen's runway is long enough, but the approach and departure will sure capture your attention.
And finally, there's Comfort Airpark half way between San Antonio and Kerrville where I hit a tree going around to avoid a deer with a Mooney 231. That grass runway is a cut swatch out of a grove of trees that serve as some big ol' deer's home. Plenty of Oh Shit factor at Comfort Airpark!
Here are some runway photos that the Best of the Best Pilots call:
Oh Shit! runways. Feel free to send a photo of any "Oh Shit" runways you've landed at.

Again, if you have any photos such as these to share with your fellow pilots, please send them. Lord knows I wish I would have taken pictures of some of the "OH SHIT" runways I've landed at.
