Bottom line is that I was very nervous buying my first airplane. I
had read hundreds of "horror stories" of people who purchased planes
only to find out shortly thereafter that there was a major issue
that was not found during the pre-buy. I did not know many of the
things associated with buying a plane . . . and to tell you the
truth it scared me!
Your service took away all of the unknown and was "priceless." From

We are in Destin, Florida this weekend and are at our second 50 hr

Check out flight aware when you get a chance. Rolla, MO --> Destin
FL in 3 1/2 hrs of flight time @ 9 gallons per hour. Can't beat
that with a commercial ticket!

Mr. Zephro
As a soon to be new pilot and hopefully plane owner I would like
to thank you for your web site, I have been researching Mooney
aircraft and figured that they are the most bang for the buck. My
question is after reading your segment on 210 vs. 231 would you
think it would wise for a new pilot to go from a Cessna 172 that I
have been training in way to long I might add. To a Mooney 231? or
am I biting off more than I can chew?

Hey Jeff,
Thank you for the compliment on our website. If you feel you’ve
gained by using it feel free to donate to help keep the articles

As a new pilot faced with the possibility/ability to fly your own
Mooney; wow! Good for you as it is the safest and most efficient
airplane in its class, but any airplane is only as safe as the pilot
is, so training is the key. You could buy a nice used 747 and
eventually learn all of its systems and how to fly it, so that makes
the difficulty in answering your questions completely. Consider a
person new to driving. Is that person better off with a Nissan
Sentra for instance, or should he or she start right off with a
sportier and more capable car, say a turbo Audi or the like?
Regardless of the Mooney you decide on, you will learn to fly it
and if you utilize our free to the buyer location service, you will
have Mooneyland support throughout the ownership and being that you
are close by in Dallas (1 hour 10 minutes away from SAT in a
Mooney), I would fly with you on occasion to help insure you’ve
learned correctly and have picked up the tips you would need to get
the most out of your airplane. With that said; let me just say that
the 201 is a bit faster plane below 8,000’ at which time the turbo
of the 231 really takes over, so you have to fly up high to really
get the benefits paid back to you for owning a turbo. If you were my
relative asking me to be a “Dutch Uncle” on the subject, I would say
that the 201 should be enough plane for you to grow in and then
later move up to the turbo should you desire. With the exception of
today’s current market, Mooneys have always enjoyed a track record
of actually increasing in value, so moving up in class is made easy
by that fact if you abide by my philosophy that if one is going to
own their own airplane, it is something to take very seriously in
that they should learn all they can about any given airplane so that
if the issue of making a split second decision ever comes in to
play, you’ll know your airplane well enough to make the “right”
decision without even thinking about it. There is less to learn in
the 201 than the 231, and those Lycoming 4 bangers take punishment
and come back for more whereby the turbo’d Continental six pack
engine can be harmed if flown incorrectly.
If you’ve trained in the traditional trainers, the 201 flight
will leave a smile on your face that will take a long time to remove
or wear out, and then with some experience and time under your belt,
you will be in a better situation to make a move-up decision or not.
The 201 is all the airplane most people would ever need.
I hope that this gives you some guidance, but there is a gray
area in choosing turbo over normally aspirated. Had you lived in
Denver, than I probably would more deeply consider the turbo.
