This does not necessarily have to be the outcome of losing your INSTRUMENTS or RADIOS!

Okay, so the hardest part of INSTRUMENT FLYING was getting the INSTRUMENT TICKET!

You've finally bit the bullet and got your Instrument. Hey, instrument flying isn't all that hard.......except when something goes wrong such as LOSING some of your INSTRUMENTS!

NOW WHAT?!

Let's say that you lose the most used instrument for IFR, the ATTITUDE INDICATOR!

horizon indicator Now what? Okay, okay, now is the time to tighten up your thinking and actions, so let's consider what to do in this case.

1. For wings level, we will have to rely on our turn coordinator. (We have to assume that all of our instruments are in top notch condition for IFR, so if your little used turn coordinator is really sloppy, best to get it overhauled just in case the AI take a hike). Hopefully our Vertical Speed Indicator is working so as to indicate ascent and descent, but what if that wiped out also? vertical speed indicator Uh oh. Darn that MURPHY!

2. That leaves us with only two instruments to indicate whether we are in a climb or descent. Do you know which two they are?

altimeter airspeed gauge Yep! Your two buddies; the airspeed indicator and the altimeter.

3. Oh crap. Really bad day as we just lost the altimeter as well so what does that leave us? altimeter

4.  Well this is where doing your (What If ) homework pays off. The next time you're boring VFR holes bring a pad and pen with you. First you will want to know your level cruise speed at a given power setting. Let's use the average J model Mooney for example: A power setting of 25 squared should yield about 140 kts indicated. Once there, begin a 500 fpm climb and once established in that climb, make note of the indicated airspeed of say 110 kias. Next begin a 500 fpm rate of descent and than make note of that airspeed. Alrighty then, we have established the approximate speeds at a given power setting for level, climb, and descending flight. Why not make a CHECKLIST for the above just in case?

5. So then, what to do if we lose the airspeed indicator as well?!.......................... airspeed gauge

If we lose absolutely EVERYTHING on a really BAD DAY, are we really done for? Is there NOTHING we can do short of BAILING OUT?

Yessir!  When  the chips are a down as they go, a Garmin 196, 296, 396, or 496 where all of those give attitude wings level as well as compass information and lots more is something no IFR pilot should be without! Whether you lose all electrical or a whole bunch of instruments, you can and will save the day with one of these bad boys! Yours truly has lost all electrical while IFR at least twice in memory as well as having to fly partial panel and each time my Garmin 296 has saved the day making what one would consider a true emergency a relative non event! Be sure to keep plenty of fresh batteries in the plane within easy reach! You can shoot an emergency ILS type approach as well, so why not stack the odds better in your favor? I am not a Garmin Dealer, but if you ask nicely enough, I can see what I can do in order to save you some bux (I do have sources you know) should you need one of these bad boys as I feel that no IFR pilot should feel "fully dressed" without one of these and a battery powered hand held Comm radio. Those of you who own their own planes should consider having your avionics guy add a pigtail to your outside comm antenna so you can plug your hand held comm radio in that pigtail and enjoy about the same power of communication as the panel mounted radio does. How cool is that?!

There are those who say that single engine IFR shouldn't exist. Well, being prepared with backups up the kazoo is the best way to put those skeptics in check. YA THINK?

So, for heaven's sake.............

FLY SAFE and be prepared for ANYTHING!
