If you are having work done on your Mooney and you find that the shop isn’t using a Propeller stand or sling of some fashion to lift the front of your beloved Mooney rather than tying the tail down to a weight. PICK UP YOUR TOYS AND TAKE THEM HOME, or at least to another shop that knows how to work on Mooneys.
Because of the way Mooneys are constructed and the way the aft fuselage is connected to the role bar structural cage Mooney does not recommend tying the tail down. The tail cone is attached via rivets and placing that kind of strain on those rivets can weaken your aircraft's structure, something you don't want to do.
I use a Propeller stand that I fashioned from a pipe stand and a pair of removable arms.
I also have one where the arms that the blades rest in pivot so that it can be used on three bladed props. I tell people that they can use a sling and an engine hoist or anything available to lift the engine or prop.
