A FEWyears ago I was asked by the owner of a Mooney shop to test fly a ’63 C
model Mooney just after it had its annual. I agreed, but jokingly asked the mechanic
who did the work to come along. He came.
Upon our taxi
at this international airport, we were directed to stop by the ground controller to
allow an American Airlines jet to taxi out of his gate. Once we were cleared to
resume our taxi, I added power to get rolling. Just at that moment, the nose gear
collapsed as the prop slammed and re-slammed in to the tarmac, followed by the main
gear collapse.
I got the engine
shut down as well as turning the fuel off so quickly afterward that I near amazed
myself. There’s a lot to say about self preservation I guess.
The mechanic was
shook. I was pissed as I had never had a plane on its belly before.
The airport
authority wanted to use a crane to remove the plane, but we argued with them. While
arguing, other mechanics were jacking the plane up and using vise grips to hold the
gear in place so we could tow the plane back to the hanger.
Turns out that the
mechanic’s download checking tool was out of tolerance apparently and the
downloading was set too high. There was some notice of corrosion inside of the gear
tubes that may have weakened the tubes allowing them to break easier.
Checking the gear
downloading in a Mooney is very important, although over the years during pre buy
inspections, I have seen a number of settings way off the mark and the Mooney still
stood proudly on its gear, but still, get yours checked annually.
