February 2007 email inquiry:

Hello,
My name is Bryan and I am considering purchasing a Mooney in the near future. I was reading through your website and I have learned a lot so far i think its awesome how much information you provide. But I did come across your first time buyers page. I know there are a lot of questions to have answered before purchasing and it has provided me with a lot of insight. But on that page it mentions that Moonyland will help me find an airplane that will fit me and let or at least have a pro help me! How much does that usually run someone? I am going to be looking for a Mid 60's Mooney under $60K and at least IFR equipped. Thanks for your help Have a great day

Hey Bryan. Nice to hear from you.

About 30% of our business is locating Mooneys for our customers. There is no charge to you the buyer for this service. Most sellers have heard of us and are eager to have us provide a buyer for them as they quickly get tired of tire kickers and lookiloos, so they don’t mind parting with a few extra bux to have our involvement, doing the paperwork, seeing the plane through pre-buy, etc. plus it’s us the buyer calls after the sale and we support the buyer with tech support, our cost and sources as a dealer on most major purchases in the future. For you, we use our vast Mooney experience to help insure you don’t buy a money pit or a functionally obsolete airplane. It’s a win-win situation all around and our location buyers indications that they are 100% happy they used us. We have saved some customers up to tens of thousands of dollars over the years and of course due to that great service, we get referrals and repeat business.

You’re a smart guy to have asked this question and it is your best move once you are ready to pull the trigger and buy a Mooney.

Long live the MOONEY!

Why does Deano and Oscar's Mooney tail look different? When is a Mooney not a Mooney? Excusive to 1971, Mooneys were not named "Mooney" they were all "Aerostars", a Mooney with forward and rear tail "stingers". Are the stingers venomous? You betcha! ;o)

SO; You're a wanna-be Mooney buyer eh...... There are some things you need to know in order to make your first Mooney ownership more of a pleasant experience as opposed to an experience of "nightmare proportions". There is so much you need to know!

Did you know that there are certain Mooneys you should shy away from? "No, I didn't know that zef, what are those?" Well, if you were considered a "Mooneyland" customer, you would know! If you want to pick my brain for free over and above what I provide you on this website; then have Mooneyland locate your new plane for you. I've gotta tell you that in my 19 years of doing this, I've given away much information that some have used to purchase planes elsewhere, and quite frankly, at this point I'm tiring of getting my noggin picked for information that has taken me decades to acquire, so we have had to effect a consultation fee for those who ask me for information and advice so that they can purchase their Mooneys from some other entity. Yet my desire for no one to get burned on a used airplane is strong. Mooneyland customers really appreciate the after sale service we provide them, and we have saved many customers up to tens of thousands of dollars with not only advice for their new acquisitions, but we provide our sources for work, parts, or accessories needed. We will always be here to advise our Mooneylanders as it is our desire to make your airplane ownership experience pleasant and informed.

Attention Newby's! 50 WAYS to ponder and enjoy your new MOONEY experience!

My first Mooney purchase was a financial nightmare, so avoid that for yourself and your family and have us locate for you at no charge to YOU, the right airplane for you. Aside from that, here are a few things to ask yourself:

1. Is this the right model for my needs?

2. Does it have any problems that could functionally obsolete the airframe at best, or make it a dangerous airplane at worst?

3. Is it a corroded airframe and what secrets do I need to know in order to insure that there is no hidden serious corrosion?

4, Is there something commonly amiss that could and would cost me thousands?

5. How really is the integrity of the fuel tanks? Just because they don't "leak" is there something beyond that which I should know?

6. What about AD's I'm not aware of? Is there an AD on many airplanes that will cost me at least $5200.00?

7. How should my new Mooney fly? Are there things I should know to ensure the airplane flies correctly?

8. What about damage history? Is it all that important, or if it is in the price, should I accept it and what would be the guidelines?

9. What are the most important things to consider in the purchase of my new Mooney?

10. Are there guidelines I will need for my instructor in order for me to feel comfortable about my transition to Mooney?

11. Am I buying a model that will have the best chance for making a profit or at least break even should I decide to sell?

12. What are cost effective things/goodies to add to my plane and what common pitfalls should I shy away from?

13. What about the proper operation and care for the more high performance engines I should be aware of?

14. Are there things of a cost effective and smart addition of I should be aware of?

15. How can I save money on things I can do myself easy enough to help prevent expenses in the future?

16. What kinds of things can I do myself and how do I make the decision that I am qualified to do so?

17. How do I help insure that my family and I are safe in my new Mooney?

18. What are some of the major pitfalls to shy away from in my search for a Mooney?

19. How can I protect myself from an automatic 20% reduction in the value of my new plane?

20. Why would I eventually slap my own head if I don't become a Mooneylander?

21. How can I save money after the purchase on ANYTHING major I will ever need for the plane?

22. How can Mooneyland or anyone help insure that I won't be taken advantage of by some unscrupulous mechanics?

23. How can I make my annuals cost only from $250-500.00 each year and maintain safety if I am somewhat skilled in the use of tools?

24. How do I keep my investment valuable and help make it even more valuable than the price I paid?

25. What is the element of  "DANGER" I should avoid when purchasing my first airplane if it's fuel injected?

26. Whom should I insure the plane with and why?

27. Who is the best company to finance and how do I make the loan so that I don't have to pay much if anything down if I don't want to?

28. What about sales tax? How do I approach that issue in states that require that?

29. What do I need to know about the thing that keeps me aloft.............my engine?!

30. Why can I trust Mooneyland to help insure I don't get a flying LEMON?

31. I'm gung ho for ownership, but how do I convince my mate?

32. Is the Mooney a good financial investment? Why?

33. How can I save money on fuel?

34. How do I save money on routine maintenance and is there someone who can guide me along?

35. How can I put a $6,000.00 leather interior in my new Mooney myself for under $1200.00?

36. How can I properly keep my plane's paint touched up and why is that important?

37. How can I know if my propeller and engine are safe?

39. What are the ways I can protect my investment?

40. Why can Mooneyland give me what I cannot find elsewhere? Hint: Unprecedented service and information after the purchase!

41. How can I help insure that I am not run out of aircraft ownership due to my choices?

42. How can I save on things like making my tires last 40% longer and such?

43. How can I be an informed and safe Mooney pilot?

44. What one thing can I safely add to my engine for cheap to make it run better than ever, last longer, remove cylinder carbon, keep my fuel system lubricated, and my valve guides healthy and save some fuel doing so?

45. Which inexpensive mods can I add that will be cost effective in the short and long run?

46. How can I know if I am a good pilot?

47. How can Mooneyland help me in finding a mechanic who won't take advantage of me and help insure he knows his Mooney stuff?

48. How can I get things done the Mooneyland way i.e. Champaign results on a BEER BUDGET?

49. How can I fly my new Mooney in a safe and economical fashion?

50. How can I use my airplane in a fun and simple to make money and get a tax write-off?

There are two kinds of Mooney buyers. Those who attempt ownership on their own, and those who take advantage of my more than 5,000 Mooney operation hours, and 33 years of Mooney experience.

Don't be uninformed! In this all important step. Use a pro and keep that pro on your side! Mooneyland will help protect you from the UNKNOWN! Don't be a former aircraft owner statistic. Keep and enjoy your Mooney investment at large!

Ya think I'm kidding? As the fleet ages, you need this professional experience on your side, so just because of the internet and you get to see on your screen some of what's out there, YOU HAVE TO ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS!

There is a lot of false information out there, so don't always believe what you read.

Mr. Zephro

As a soon to be new pilot and hopefully plane owner I would like to thank you for your web site,  I have been researching Mooney aircraft and figured that they are the most bang for the buck.  My question is after reading your segment on 210 vs. 231  would you think it would wise for a new pilot to go from a Cessna 172 that I have been training in  way to long I might add. To a Mooney 231? or am I biting off more than I can chew?

Thank you for your time on this.

Jeffery Mead

Hey Jeff,

Thank you for the compliment on our website. If you feel you’ve gained by using it feel free to donate to help keep the articles coming. ;o)

As a new pilot faced with the possibility/ability to fly your own Mooney; wow! Good for you as it is the safest and most efficient airplane in its class, but any airplane is only as safe as the pilot is, so training is the key. You could buy a nice used 747 and eventually learn all of its systems and how to fly it, so that makes the difficulty in answering your questions completely. Consider a person new to driving. Is that person better off with a Nissan Sentra for instance, or should he or she start right off with a sportier and more capable car, say a turbo Audi or the like?

Regardless of the Mooney you decide on, you will learn to fly it and if you utilize our free to the buyer location service, you will have Mooneyland support throughout the ownership and being that you are close by in Dallas (1 hour 10 minutes away from SAT in a Mooney), I would fly with you on occasion to help insure you’ve learned correctly and have picked up the tips you would need to get the most out of your airplane. With that said; let me just say that the 201 is a bit faster plane below 8,000’ at which time the turbo of the 231 really takes over, so you have to fly up high to really get the benefits paid back to you for owning a turbo. If you were my relative asking me to be a “Dutch Uncle” on the subject, I would say that the 201 should be enough plane for you to grow in and then later move up to the turbo should you desire. With the exception of today’s current market, Mooneys have always enjoyed a track record of actually increasing in value, so moving up in class is made easy by that fact if you abide by my philosophy that if one is going to own their own airplane, it is something to take very seriously in that they should learn all they can about any given airplane so that if the issue of making a split second decision ever comes in to play, you’ll know your airplane well enough to make the “right” decision without even thinking about it. There is less to learn in the 201 than the 231, and those Lycoming 4 bangers take punishment and come back for more whereby the turbo’d Continental six pack engine can be harmed if flown incorrectly.

If you’ve trained in the traditional trainers, the 201 flight will leave a smile on your face that will take a long time to remove or wear out, and then with some experience and time under your belt, you will be in a better situation to make a move-up decision or not. The 201 is all the airplane most people would ever need.

I hope that this gives you some guidance, but there is a gray area in choosing turbo over normally aspirated. Had you lived in Denver, than I probably would more deeply consider the turbo.

Take care,

Rich Zephro
