As I sit contemplating having to lose some weight in order to force my blood pressure in a downward trend so as to continue passing my medicals, I can foresee some day when the FAA will no longer allow me to be pilot in command but you know what? My life would not have been near as rich as it has without having the ability to fly.
Looking back to my life as a kid; one who looked up every time a plane passed on by, the thought had never crossed my mind that some day all those planes flying out of my nearby Van Nuys Airport (VNY) could some day be me flying one of them. My parents were not of the type that would instill the thought in their kids that they could be anything they wanted to be so I had to eventually give birth to that thought from within. I eventually did that!
Flying (especially in my own personal Mooneys) had afforded me the greatest form of personal freedom an individual can enjoy. There is simply nothing like the ability to fly one's own aircraft and I get quite a number of emails from aspiring airplane owners and all I can say and recommend to them is do what you have to do; eat Cheerios for dinner, drive an old gas saving Toyota, live in a rented house as opposed to owning, stay single if you can, and even put off having children until later; just do whatever you can in order to become one of the "ELITE" group of people that own and operate their own personal flying machine, even if it takes great personal sacrifice, and one day when you walk up to your own airplane to take a ride or travel somewhere, it is something that you need to do that goes so way beyond the norm that makes life more worth living than any other endeavor that I could ever think of.
No doubt as you pass through this life you will have moments of incredible stress, the kind that occupies your mind constantly without stop and at times you think that only some shrink can cure. Well, instead of paying all that money to some shrink, invest it in an airplane I kid you not! THE ONLY TIME THAT I AM ABLE TO FORGET MY PERSONAL TROUBLES IN LIFE IS WHEN I AM FLYING! Pure and simple, and I'm not the only one; in fact many pilot/owners have told me the same. When flying, it is just you and the machine against the elements and against all odds. Well, that's a stretch, but when you sit back and think hard, flying is a man-made miracle that is irrefutable, unbelievable, and for the die-hard many of us, achievable! Really; how else are you ever going to see your own effigy against the tops of a summer cloud? How else will you ever see the fleeting perfectly round rainbow, the horizon out of the windshield, the feeling of exhilaration as you "drive" down some runway, yank back and take to the skies?! Flying along some Interstate seeing all the traffic backed up to no end while experiencing the joy of being ABOVE IT ALL! The ability to turn a simple weekend into a mini vacation in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Orlando Florida, New Orleans, Washington DC, South Dakota, San Francisco's wine country, the ocean, the snow, the mountains, the deserts, Pizza in Chicago or New York, that delicious $100.00 hamburger, etc.? If you had to drive at 55 mph on average, how will you experience those places that you can get to on a weekend at more than 4 times the ground speeds you get in a boring (and very slow) automobile?! Are you going to take a last minute airline flight to those places at $1,000.00 round trip or more? Not likely, but it is likely that you can jump in your own airplane and go to see these places more often than not, so not only does flying your own aircraft translate in to the most important personal piece of property that you will ever own, it will open up a world of travel and subsequent memories that you would never have experienced, and not only that, you will meet other pilot/owners whom are among the finest people that you could ever meet. Why? Because only they will have in common and know how privileged you both are in the best kept secret on earth; that joy you get above all else when you own and operate your own personal airliner, and for the fastest, most affordable, and safest personal aircraft in the sky, buy a Mooney! Hell, you can get a decent one for about the price of a good SUV automobile yet your Mooney will normally increase in value as opposed to your SUV taking a huge hit with time. DO IT! You'll be a happier person for it and you will not end up on your death bed regretting that you had never grown the cahonies to OWN YOUR OWN PLANE!
