"Zef, Almost done with your
book! I'm reading slower so it won't be done! It's a great read not only for Mooniacs, but
for anyone who wants to be a plane owner.
" Bill Custer
"Dear Mr. Zephro, Your new
book is the most informative that I have read not just about Mooneys but
about the ownership process for any brand of airplane. I look forward to
reading the rest of the series once you write those." Ed Harris
"Wow, what an interesting and
informative book! You've made me rethink the buying process and I am
grateful not just for that, but for all of the articles you have written
about Mooney's and flying in general. You have a way to help make people
think. Please keep writing!" Art Mingle
"Mr. Z, This is the best 40
bucks that I have ever spent! There are so many outlined ways to save money
while learning so much about airplanes in general and I believe that I'll be
a better pilot for it. Keep up the great work and good luck with your new
book" Jim Dougherty

Thanks Zef!
You Sir are a true professional. It felt good to get back in an airplane
again. I still haven't been able to get a hold of Willie, I'll try again
later tonight.
Angie and I might even make a trip out to the hangar tomorrow just to
look at her and clean the mud and grass off :)
I'm ready to go up and get safe again. Today was a great day, thanks to
you!

Zef -
I wanted to take a few minutes to "Thank you" for your assistance in
purchasing my new plane. Feel free to post this email on your website if
you would like.
Bottom line is that I was very nervous buying my first airplane. I had read
hundreds of "horror stories" of people who purchased planes only to find out
shortly thereafter that there was a major issue that was not found during
the pre-buy. I did not know many of the things associated with buying a
plane . . . and to tell you the truth it scared me!
Your service took away all of the unknown and was "priceless." From the
deals you were able to get on upgrades and headsets to the A&P you put me in
contact with for the Pre-Buy made the whole process easy. Bottom line, is
your services were worth thousands of dollars of peace of mind and I am sure
you did not make that much brokering my plane!
We are in Destin, Florida this weekend and are at our second 50 hr oil
change in 3 1/2 months! The plane has been to Harrisburg, PA; Colorado
Springs, CO; Houston, TX; Memphis, TN; and Albuquerque, NM and it has two
trips planned to the east cost over the next two months. It definitely is
not going to be a hangar queen.
Check out flight aware when you get a chance. Rolla, MO --> Destin FL in 3
1/2 hrs of flight time @ 9 gallons per hour. Can't beat that with a
commercial ticket!
Hope all is well and if a potential buyer needs a reference, feel free to
give them my number!

Sir --
My name is MAJ Bill Benner and I am at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. I just
purchased M20F through Richard Zephro at Mooneyland and should be picking it
up on Tuesday. There are a few Army and Air Force guys that have purchased
planes through Mooneyland and we have become friends and plan to meet up for
different flying events, etc. I highly recommend Rich in your search. He has
saved me thousands of dollars in upgrades already and I have not even picked
up the plane yet.
Hope your search goes well and if you are interested in finding excuses to
meet up somewhere for a $100 hamburger let me know!

If
it wasn’t for you Richard ….. The time you spent (countless hours with me on
the phone) I wouldn’t be nearly the pilot I am today. You encouraged me to
get better and practice every chance I could! You taught me THE BASICS that
have applied from the first 201 you sold me to my New Acclaim. Thank you
Richard, you are the expert of experts and have become a great friend and
I honestly believe you have no idea the people and pilots
you have helped over the years. I've spent over a million dollars on
my 4 Mooney airplanes (that number might be low) and travel across
America including the factory and haven't found anyone yet that knows
more about Mooney's and is as helpful as you. Id bet my life any day on
your advice how to fly my plane. You are a great friend and wonderful
aviator! Tom Leonard N233KT
A recent email to compliment my website included a question from a very
experienced pilot whose constructive sarcasm brought in to question about how
many emergencies I have had in my career. He is correct that it is an inordinate
amount and does not reflect on the experiences of most pilots, but I have an
unusual occupation in that I fly so many different aircraft in which many have
sat and not been maintained. Read his remarks and my response:

Your web site is a good one. i'm on my fourth mooney
been flying for 50 years and i think that you have
had more near death experiences than i had my entire career of over 25,00
hours both military, light planes and airline. scares me and im sittig in
my living room. i had no idea flying was dangerous or so
complicated. :-)

Hi Jim,
I'm not sure how to take your comments but I always
appreciate feedback.
In my business I fly many aircraft that owners knew
they were going to sell for quite some time and human nature is such to let
things go that should have been fixed; planes that have sat for months and
even years, flying planes just after annuals, etc. I agree that I have an
unusual amount of emergencies or near emergencies and those mentioned above
are some of the reasons. I have had 6 engine failures in flight and 2 in one
day just at lift-off. I only wish that gen av aircraft were maintained to
military and airline specs not to mention updating engine components. 4 of
my 6 failures were due to the old style fuel injector servo as found on many
early engines overhauled prior to around 1985 and two were induced by a
lousy mechanics including two weeks after 9/11 where those idiots at Cutter
Aviation used a black automobile O ring at the injector filter screen that
did not fit and had to use some goop which helped clog where the injector
needle passes through and I had to make a landing at Randolph AFB where
after being arrested to spite the controller clearing me to land, once that
was straightened out and they realized I was not Osama, they let me go
thinking it was water. Then after that takeoff from there, the engine quit
again and I managed to keep it running part time enough to circuit for
landing once again. With your military experience, you ought to be able to
get that info from the AFB. FBI and FAA were involved until they got proof
that the O ring caused the problem. My last one was Thanksgiving two years
ago where I picked up an F model from a farmer in Tennessee where the plane
had been rarely flown for years and flown out of a cow pasture basically and
was missing the gasket on the ram air so the induction system had been
sucking in dust and debris for Lord knows how long, so once the plane had
flown beyond a few touch and goes, it was me the engine quit on and I barely
made the airport but made it going through two small trees to do it.
The two engine failures on the same day had to do
with Mooney Rockets that were in for annual at Lone Star Mooney and their
fuel flow calibration tool was out of tolerance and both engines failed on
me just after lift-off about the time when full power is added on the 305 HP
Rocket engine which wants to fly even before you get full power in.
I hit a tree on having to go around because of a
deer at Comfort Airpark when the wind switched on me at the wrong time and
that would have taken the wing off anything else besides a Mooney.
Ken Shoup, the original owner of All American Mooney
was a friend and at times I would sell off of his inventory as well, so Ken
used to ask me to test fly planes coming out of his shop which I was glad to
do, but they had so many employee problems in those days that it seemed like
emergencies were the order of the day so I quit flying for them at one
point, especially after two engine failures in one day, a gear collapse of
an older Mooney on taxi due to improper downloading of the gear, a stuck
trim on a 201 I was taking to Florida which nearly caused the plane to go
out of control, I flew a 201 just after an annual there and they forgot to
hook the rudder back up to the steering system, etc. I had never had an
emergency in any plane I've owned and maintained personally.
Yessir, I've had much more than my share of
emergencies and now that I'm 60, I mostly let others do the flying for me
except the times I fly with my buyers to wring them out and to move a plane
locally. My goal is to help warn especially those without a whole lot of
flying experience to those things that can go wrong to aid them in becoming
an "aware" pilot, thus a safer pilot.
Thank you for the compliment on my website. We work
hard for Mooney enthusiasts and would happily accept a donation for the
information.
Been flying the heck out of my plane and
wanted to write you a quick note to thank you for all you did helping get this plane. I
thought for sure it was never gonna happen (other broker) but you got it done! Took a while
to work everything out and get it all the way across the country but well worth it so once
again thanks. Only problem that in order to fly for more than an hour or so I gotta really
plan a trip ;-) No more lazily flying around which is a good thing as it has made me a
better pilot. I refuse to get behind the airplane, with the Cessna it was pretty hard to do
as you could nearly nap and fly it.

Dear Brandon,
Thank you for your CD order, contribution, and more importantly your great
letter.
I found it interesting correlating flying to horse riding. In both cases, the
“machine” beneath us has to be properly managed; some get it, some don’t.
Please mention to Lisa, that over all, I have found private flying to be as safe
or safer than a ride in the car. However, like anything the airplane needs to be respected and
most importantly, the pilot needs to be armed with knowledge of what he’s doing at all times.
The weakest link of a fast horse is the rider and that carries over to fliers as well, so the
idea is to make that weak link as strong as possible.
Lisa, you will find a whole new world opened up to you when flying privately.
It’s like being in a car with a great view! There are no safer airplanes in their class than the
Mooney, and if you maintain the airplane properly which is not hard to do in a Mooney, and you
fly in weather you can handle, put enough gas in the plane, and you’ll be just fine having the
world become a much smaller place once you own your own and operate your personal family
airliner.
Mooneyland will always be behind your endeavors in flying, and Brandon has shown
his seriousness and class by the way he is going about all of this. Once you get used to flying,
you will begin to enjoy it very much and imagine that weekend trips to Vegas or the Colorado
River and like places will now be possible without the time it would take to drive. We’re
talking a minimum of 3 times faster in the Mooney than in your car and with good gas mileage to
boot!
We at Mooneyland look forward to serving your needs and supporting your purchase
in the future.
Stay in touch!
Kind Regards,
Richard Zephro

Richard,
I’m
writing to again say what a pleasure it was to work with you on the location and purchase of
1152G. Without you, a Mooney never would have been in the picture for Lisa and me. Your
total conviction to the Mooney line first got us interested and we are now true believers.
You’re pre-buy check out coordination with the Mooney Service Center in Denver brought to us (in Florida) an
absolute gem of a plane. We also followed your suggestion and corrosion treated the plane to
help offset our Florida humidity. This year, we breezed through our first Annual with
absolutely no surprises what so ever. What a relief!
Richard, I would be more than happy to tell
any of your potential clients that the cost of your service was a true bargain! Also, your
focus on your client is too be highly commended in this day of high powered, fast talking,
no service after the sale environment that is prevalent out there. Not knowing the nuances
of the Mooney, it was very reassuring to have an extremely competent expert watching out for
our interests. You, for the weeks prior to locating 1152G, put up with my barrage of
questions and concerns, and were always very accommodating in every way.
Here we
are, almost a year and 170 hours later, flying an airplane that is perfect in every way. We
both absolutely love the 231 platform and cannot imagine a more perfect fit for us and our
flying needs. It flies better, and more fuel efficiently, than anything we have ever flown
and it has the speed, handling, altitude capability, dependability, and rock solid feel that
I am extremely secure with. It is absolutely light years ahead of our former 182 in EVERY
way! Yes, we are Floridian flatlanders, but the 231’s altitude capability sure does come in
handy on those hot, towering cumulus days. It really is nice to quickly get above all of the
lower altitude air traffic, circumnavigate the towering stuff, and pick up those wind speeds
at altitude. The monthly trips to Asheville are now fast and smooth…a Lisa requirement!
If we ever decide to move up in the Mooney
line, you definitely will be my only phone call.
Best Regards,

the transaction.
He

quite helpful, so I'm recommending him to those of you still seeking a good Mooney.
I'm sure the buyer of my aircraft will appreciate his services in years to come as he is

Dear Mr. Eaton,
I’ve been in telephone contact with Rich Zephro. He suggested I contact you because
you’ve had experience with him and his service.
I’m a first-time airplane purchaser, although I’ve been flying for 20 years. Mr.
Zephro and I had a nice conversation last week and I’m eager to learn more about him and
his service.
Would you be willing to answer a few questions?
Are you satisfied with what Mr. Zephro did for you?
Yes. Richard truly loves Mooneys and takes a genuine interest in his customers. He will
be there for you after the sale.
Would you use him again?
Absolutley. As a matter of fact, I have used him again.
I bought my very first airplane from him about a year ago. He did a lot of "first time
buyer" hand holding for me. I decided to get something newer and faster, so I called
Richard. I had him sell my old airplane and find me my current aircraft.
How satisfied are you with your airplane? I love my plane. I get a lot of
compliments on it.
What things did you learn during the aircraft purchase
process that you wish would have been done differently? With my desire for speed and appearence,
I wish I had went directly to my current 231.
Now that you own your aircraft, what features do you
wish the aircraft had but doesn’t?
I
pretty much had Richard go over the plane for me before I brought it home. I had new
leather, MX20, and GPS installed there. I also had him arrange paint. The paint shop did
a good job for the price but was terribly slow. I am not real pleased with my Terra
radios. I am having them replaced with new Garmins here locally.
What features were important to you while shopping,
but don’t seem important now that you own an aircraft?
Nothing. I studied up on the Mooney line so I knew what features were common. I will
tell you one thing; I never have flown with autopilot before my Mooneys. My 231 has an
S-Tec 60-2 that flys the plane beautifully. I wouldn't want to live without one now.
Do you have any advice for me? I’m on the
beginning of the airplane purchase cycle.I trust Richard, and would listen to
his advice. Think of what you want to use the plane for then relate that information to
Richard. He will help put you in the right plane. If you are seriously considering
Mooney, then most of your work is behind you. I remember spending hours researching the
different brands. I am very happy with my choice.
I went to Lakeland last weekend. Before I left I talked to
some other people at the airport about them going. They were talking about the long 4 hour
plus trip. I made it in 2 hours and 15 minutes. I flew at 11500 burning 10.5 GPH
while cruising at 172KTAS! What's not
to love? I bought a new oxygen regulator while at Lakeland and flew back at 17500! What
fun.
Is there anything else that I should ask that I
haven’t?
Paul Eaton's reply:
Dear Bruce,
Richard does this for a living. He has
many contacts in the industry and can save you money on upgrades, parts, and service. He
is a valuable resource and will treat you right.
Make yourself feel good about your purchase. Don't take anyone's word verbatim. Do your
homework. Get on AOPA and do the V-REF value service on things he brings to you. You
should find him right in line. If it needs new glass, have him do it. If it needs new
leather, have him do it. He saved me several thousand in my project.
Good luck! If you have any more questions, feel free.

Dr. Jeff Rhodes
Hello, Jeff,
We had a 1983 M20K. It had a prop strike in Japan and did not have a
complete set of logs when my husband Mark purchased it in crates. We had a
very competent man here in Kansas put it back together good as new and spent
many wonderful hours in that plane. My husband was diagnosed with terminal
stomach cancer in May and we quickly got all our affairs in order, but he
just couldn't bring himself to sell the plane. It was his baby, his freedom.
He researched brokers extensively and although many were more well known and
had been around a long time, Mark really felt like Richard's enthusiasm
could turn the negatives of prop strike and lack of complete logs around for
us. He spoke with Richard in depth, questioned everything and felt like he
was the right man to do the job for us. Mark owned a
Ford/Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep new car dealership for 20 years and was an
experienced salesman and judge of character. He was completely confident in
Richard, his salesmanship and sales history. Mark hired him knowing he would
get fair market value for his Mooney, and also knowing the proceeds would
benefit his family after he was gone. Within a week Richard had a deposit
from a man in Florida, and when that deal went South a week later, he had
another prospect lined up that did buy the plane for a great price.
Everything went very smoothly, Richard answered emails and questions
immediately and was good for his word. He was straight-forward, spoke with
our bank about handling the money transfer and truly went the second mile
for us. He made a VERY difficult time in our lives easier by handling every
detail and being completely open and honest with us.
As far as the contract, he wrote one up, emailed it to us, we had a chance
to make corrections. We did not give him a bottom dollar price, it just was
not that simple given the history of the plane, but we just expected fair
market value. What we received was extremely fair and the entire deal was
done in around a month. Mark and I have a good friend who is also the
president of our bank and he was very impressed with the entire transaction
as well and had been in on it from the beginning. I just received a copy of
the delivery receipt. I never had to speak with potential buyers and never
expect to hear from the buyer or Richard about anything that may happen in
the future. It was a very clean, honest and quick transaction.
To be fair, I would tell you any negatives about this deal and Richard if I
had any at all. I simply do not. I sincerely hope this helps and you feel
completely comfortable with and confident in the person you hire to sell
your plane. It IS a big deal and many potential buyers are difficult to
handle. We actually tried to sell it ourselves before hiring Richard, but
after receiving so many responses to our ads it wore Mark out. He did not
take the task of selling our plane lightly, and it gave him tremendous peace
of mind to find the "right guy for the job". For us, it was Richard Zephro
and we are very happy with everything.
I wish you the very best in selling your F model.

call last year. You have been as good as your word on following up and being helpful and have
spent so much time and gone out of your way so many times for us, for what must not have been a
great commission on the sale of 28V. Like you, we are in it for the love of aviation, and,
as you can see from the work we have done on the plane, it has been done by ourselves or
otherwise we would have not been able to afford this dream. Thank you again for spending

I bought my plane through Rich and feel like he
gave honest effort and hard work for his money. The sale would not have happened w/o him and
suspect that the seller would say same. One recurrent theme that echoes throughout the Mooney
biz is that every broker has detractors-in fact at one get together heard that no broker ever
has good to say about the others. The margin these guys work on that precludes full
investigations-suspect that when the plane is honest and the parties are same it works and all
are happy.
However, deception/dishonesty, etc. on either the
buyers or sellers part can make the best broker stink. Have had my plane for two years and look
back to the services that Rich provided as key-it was my first plane and a big step for me. He
flew to DC on my nickel, ferried it to SAT, arranged some repairs and checked me out in
it-excellent work-and very conscientious. If I had to sell the first call would be to Rich-or to
buy another same call. Plus he's one hell of a cook!!
Good Luck

Dear Richard,
Thank you for the box of Mooney gifts, it is much
appreciated. Glad to hear you made your flight.
Let me tell you how great this Mooney is.
Sunday, my instructor and I flew to Wilkesboro, North Carolina from Cincinnati, Luken Field.
On the way there just west of the mountains, we encountered a building layer of clouds and
climbed to 9500' to stay on top. The clouds became thicker and finally solid IMC (almost
could not see the wing tips). The autopilot preformed flawlessly as Atlanta Center guided
us over the mountains and through the decent until we broke out at 3500'.
The return flight was filed as IFR for 10000', 8
degrees C., 2500 rpm and about 20.5 inches of manifold (ram air open). According to the Mooney
manual, this is only about 60% power and I am doing 10 mph better than book!!! The
speed over the ground, as indicated by the GPS was 189 MPH (we had a small headwind). Time
enroute, threshold to threshold was about 1:40. We also encountered some early convective
buildup and flew right through it with the autopilot on. Despite having a hard time viewing the
instruments because of the turbulence, the autopilot never even had a hiccup (like James Bond
says "shaken not stirred"). This is a great machine. How do other aircraft companies
sell anything?
Rich, on Tuesday I was in Cleveland (the mistake
on the lake) and a dealer client offered a ride in his 1985 Piper Dakota. It was a nice
plane with beautiful paint, air conditioning, and a big leather interior. BUT, then
I noticed all of the gaps and rivets and items sticking out all over the place (looked as
aerodynamic as a 1974 Ford LDT). Then we went up. I am watching the speed and
waiting, okay we've leveled off, I'm still waiting and waiting, and then the airspeed finally
reads 115 knots...big deal. Two hundred thirty five horsepower and the same airspeed as a
warrior? And he spent more than I did! Well, maybe one day he'll see the light and
join the fast movers.
AM I EVER GLAD I BOUGHT A MOONEY!!!!
Rich, when I have the money or win the lottery I
will have to buy the Missle, or the 350 horsepower ICBM (or whatever they call it). Get
those Lear jets out of my way, I'm coming through!
Thank you again, I love my Mooney!!

Very good news. You did an excellent job
of marketing my airplane, and I'm very happy with the results. Please feel free to use me as a
reference if you ever need one.

Mr. Zephro
As a soon to be new pilot and hopefully plane owner I would like to
thank you for your web site, I have been researching Mooney aircraft and
figured that they are the most bang for the buck. My question is after
reading your segment on 210 vs. 231 would you think it would wise for a new
pilot to go from a Cessna 172 that I have been training in way to long I
might add. To a Mooney 231? or am I biting off more than I can chew?
Thank you for your time on this.

Hey Jeff,
Thank you for the compliment on our website. If you feel you’ve
gained by using it feel free to donate to help keep the articles coming. ;o)
As a new pilot faced with the possibility/ability to fly your own
Mooney; wow! Good for you as it is the safest and most efficient airplane in
its class, but any airplane is only as safe as the pilot is, so training is
the key. You could buy a nice used 747 and eventually learn all of its
systems and how to fly it, so that makes the difficulty in answering your
questions completely. Consider a person new to driving. Is that person
better off with a Nissan Sentra for instance, or should he or she start
right off with a sportier and more capable car, say a turbo Audi or the
like?
Regardless of the Mooney you decide on, you will learn to fly it
and if you utilize our free to the buyer location service, you will have
Mooneyland support throughout the ownership and being that you are close by
in Dallas (1 hour 10 minutes away from SAT in a Mooney), I would fly with
you on occasion to help insure you’ve learned correctly and have picked up
the tips you would need to get the most out of your airplane. With that
said; let me just say that the 201 is a bit faster plane below 8,000’ at
which time the turbo of the 231 really takes over, so you have to fly up
high to really get the benefits paid back to you for owning a turbo. If you
were my relative asking me to be a “Dutch Uncle” on the subject, I would say
that the 201 should be enough plane for you to grow in and then later move
up to the turbo should you desire. With the exception of today’s current
market, Mooneys have always enjoyed a track record of actually increasing in
value, so moving up in class is made easy by that fact if you abide by my
philosophy that if one is going to own their own airplane, it is something
to take very seriously in that they should learn all they can about any
given airplane so that if the issue of making a split second decision ever
comes in to play, you’ll know your airplane well enough to make the “right”
decision without even thinking about it. There is less to learn in the 201
than the 231, and those Lycoming 4 bangers take punishment and come back for
more whereby the turbo’d Continental six pack engine can be harmed if flown
incorrectly.
If you’ve trained in the traditional trainers, the 201 flight
will leave a smile on your face that will take a long time to remove or wear
out, and then with some experience and time under your belt, you will be in
a better situation to make a move-up decision or not. The 201 is all the
airplane most people would ever need.
I hope that this gives you some guidance, but there is a gray
area in choosing turbo over normally aspirated. Had you lived in Denver,
than I probably would more deeply consider the turbo.
