ACTUAL BOOK REVIEW FEEDBACK

"Zef, Almost done with your book!  I'm reading slower so it won't be done! It's a great read not only for Mooniacs, but for anyone who wants to be a plane owner. " Bill Custer

"Dear Mr. Zephro, Your new book is the most informative that I have read not just about Mooneys but about the ownership process for any brand of airplane. I look forward to reading the rest of the series once you write those." Ed Harris

"Wow, what an interesting and informative book! You've made me rethink the buying process and I am grateful not just for that, but for all of the articles you have written about Mooney's and flying in general. You have a way to help make people think. Please keep writing!" Art Mingle

"Mr. Z, This is the best 40 bucks that I have ever spent! There are so many outlined ways to save money while learning so much about airplanes in general and I believe that I'll be a better pilot for it. Keep up the great work and good luck with your new book" Jim Dougherty

MOONEY CHECK LIST PAGE

While Check Lists may vary, it is good to establish a guideline to help insure your bird is READY to FLY, keep flying, and get her down in almost any scenario. However, do I use checklists? Not often. Why, because I had memorized the really important stuff years ago and I have committed to memory almost anything that could happen that I have control over, and am confident that I can make the adjustments to procedure in a matter of seconds. Don't get me wrong, checklists have their place, but I can think back to at least half a dozen times that had I taken the time to read the checklist, it may have been too late. Make your own decision, keep checklists handy in your airplane, but I feel it important that you commit to memory as part of your soul what to do in case this or that occurs and you may not be afforded the time to react by reading a checklist. Use these checklists as guidelines only and commit them to memory. It is well worth that effort, so do it like homework and have someone test your knowledge. I have included checklists for the following Mooney models: M20C, M20F, M20K-252, M20R-Ovation2. You may garner knowledge from reading them all and applying what you've read to your particular make and model. With the exception of speed differences, you can apply most emergency operating procedures to any Mooney or many other aircraft in the same type. Should you wish to copy and print these check lists, print them out on the best quality your printer has, and then take them to your local copy place and have them covered in plastic for best longevity.

WARNING:  Do not change fuel tanks immediately before takeoff.

TAKEOFF:

1.  At 65-75 MPH increase back pressure, then relax slightly after A/C breaks ground to keep nose on the horizon.  For crosswind takeoff, hold A/C on the ground to a higher speed, then pull up abruptly and make a coordinated turn into wind to correct for drift when clear of ground.

2.  Tap Brakes briefly and then Retract landing gear as soon as safely airborne and in good control.

3.  Retract Flaps upon clearing obstacles and IAS of 80 to 90 MPH.

4.  Reduce Throttle to 25 “MP w/i 2 minutes.

5.  Turn off Fuel Pump at a safe altitude and then check fuel pressure.

6.  Climb at 115-120 for visibility and cooling.  Best rate of climb speed is 100 MPH at sea level, decreasing approx. 1 MPH per 1000 feet of altitude.

Maximum Angle of climb is about 80 MPH gear and flaps up.

6.  Ignition Switch -- BOTH.

7.  Mixture Control -- Move slowly and smoothly to FULL RICH.

8.  Re-establish cruise power and RPM, then lean mixture.

DESCENT PRIOR TO LANDING:

1.  Reduce Power gradually to avoid rapid engine cooling Try reducing Prop RPM as a means to slow down without shock cooling. 19.5 squared works well in this model.

2.  Plan descent early.
